My life in Tralee

My Name is Nina, and I have been living in Tralee, Ireland for the last 6 Months. It’s hard to believe that we’ll be moving to France next week, it feels like we arrived here just yesterday. I am looking forward to our time in Bordeaux, but I can gladly say that I will be leaving Ireland with good memories only.

We arrived here in August 2023 and when I got picked up by my host family, it took some time to get used to my new life, but very soon I felt comfortable and knew that my time here will be amazing. I live with my host mother Katherina and her fiancé Keith, who are a very nice couple. Katherina is a very great cook and Keith always has interesting stories to share. Their house is not far from town, which makes it easy for me to get around.

As my internship I was assigned to a company called Ard Ri Marble. The Company has three main brands which are: Henley Stoves, Deanta Doors, and Fitzgibbon Interiors. They manufacture doors and stoves and have a store for all kinds of furniture. I am employed as an HR Intern and get to help the HR manager by doing different onboarding tasks or organizing different trainings for our warehouse employees. I really enjoyed working there, because I got to learn a lot and the people are nice.

Twice a week we had school to prepare us for the Cambridge English exams in December. Besides the normal classes, the school organized different trips all around Kerry like visiting the cliffs of Moher or visiting cities/towns like cork and dingle. My friends and I went to a few of those trips, but we also planned some ourselves. For example, we made a weekend trip to Belfast, or another time we went to the Christmas market in Galway. We saw pretty much everything there is to see in Ireland. It is a very beautiful country with much to see, the only downside is the rain which comes at least once a day.

When we aren’t planning new trips or exploring new cities, I like to go to the gym, walk the canal walk to the ocean or just go drinking coffee and having a nice chat with friends. On the weekends the whole group meets up to go out and have some fun. I am very grateful to have such a wonderful group, where everyone gets along and has a good time.

My six-month stay in Ireland has been an enriching journey filled with getting to know a different culture, meeting new people, making new friends, and of course improving my English. As I prepare to embark on the next chapter of my adventure in France, I know that I will always cherish the memories made here and I would like to thank Movetia for making all of it possible. It has been an unforgettable experience so far and I am looking forward to making many more great memories.

My life in Tralee

Hello everybody, my name is Gianna. I am 18 years old. I live in Tralee since the 2nd of August. At the beginning of my language stay, I was very excited and nervous. In the moment we arrived in Tralee this feeling was gone. My host mom who had picked me up this day is really kind and lovely. We are getting on well since the first second.

I am so grateful for my host family. They are like my second parents. At the start of my stay, there were also two Italian girls for one month in the family. Sajmir, my host dad is caring, and I really enjoy talking to him and making jokes with him. He is brilliant in discussions. Another important member of the host family is Luna, the dog. Normally I fear dogs, but this dog is so funny and sweet! That is why I fell in love with her quickly. Lirie, my host mom, is furthermore excellently good in cooking. I have never had so tasty meals before. Thank you, family Mucaj, for hosting me.

At the weekends we did many exciting trips to cities like Cork, Dingle, South Kerry and Dublin. My favorite trip was the horse-riding trip on the beach. It was such an incredible experience. Another big part of my free time was playing rugby. I started at the end of August with rugby. I met many nice and funny girls and I got part of the rugby training every Wednesday. We did most of the time tackling training. That sounds more aggressive than it is. The most important part in rugby is that technique and convincement is much more worth than only strength. Thanks to all my teammates, it was every week a big pleasure with you. Additionally, I joined the Tralee parkrun twice and was volunteering at this event. It was unbelievable to see so many people running the 5 kilometers despite of the horrible weather.

To improve our English skills, we started our language stay with a two-week school session. After these two weeks we had started at our work placements and had school at two days in the evening. For me, school in the evening after work was hard and made me tired. I would recommend doing 4 days of work and one day of school. At the beginning of December, we passed our language exams in Cork. I felt well prepared, and I am looking forward to getting the results at the end of January.

At my work placement, bathrooms4u, I acted in the office. I loved all the people there. We were just like a big family. My daily business was preparing the sheets for our sales reps, phoning for accommodations for our workers, do filing and clean up and finally doing phone calls with our customers.

A big thank to all of you from the kv plus program for offering me this chance to have such a fantastic time in Ireland. I will never forget these six months. It was a pleasure for me.

January 2024, Gianna

It’s been 4 Months already since my arrival at Cork Airport. Time seems to be rushing past me, as I will return back home in less than 2 Months. I have experienced a lot, but I will try to highlight the most important events.

Host Families are very much desired at the moment. My host mother Bernadette gets almost daily calls from agencies that ask her to take another student. At the moment she takes care of 6 Students, which I find impressive because she is also holding down a job at the same time. But still there is always a meal ready for me in the morning when I go to work and one when I get back. She is very open and talkative so we have numerous conversations together.

Living in Ireland is very different from France. It’s much colder and as you probably guessed it rains a lot. Somehow I still survived without buying an umbrella. May it be my stubburnness or just stupid luck that I never got soaked in the rain. Foodwise there are also a fair share of differences. For some reason the Irish love potatoes. May that be in whatever form they come. I am not as intrigued to try the irish specialities like black pudding or white pudding. Google it and find out for yourself why I am hesitant to try them.

Working in Ireland was and still is a blessing compared to Switzerland. As it happens, I work at Cork Airport. I find myself with some beforehand experience as I do my apprenticeship at Zurich Airport. Together with Dominik, Nico and Jana we get the chance to work in numerous different departments such as Car Parks, Communication, Security, Duty Free and many more. Just recently we were introduced into a new project and were presented with the opportunity to take a lead in it. It’s entertaining to compare the Airport in Cork with the one in Zurich and to match similarities as well as differences between the two. All in all I can say that I find myself amongst amazing coworkers. Always up for a quick chat or ready to help with minor inconveniences that may appear. They take an interest in us and want to learn as much about Switzerland as we want to learn from them about Ireland.

But not to forget there is also my free time, which I tend to fill with workouts at the gym, travel, as well as a nice pint of beer in the closest Pub that I can find. Having been to Ballycotton, Kinsale and some other places, I can assure you that Ireland is a nice place to travel if you enjoy nature. It’s called the Green Island for some reason right? But to be honest with you I am not much of a traveler rather than an explorer of the Pubs, which are often filled with live music. This is amazing, because it gives you a totally different experience than you are used to from bars in Switzerland. The People, young and old, find themselves there to dance, chat and sing along the lines of the band. Always very entertaining to attend.

Coming back to a more serious matter. I have my CPE exams in two days and I am quite nervous to be honest. Since the CPE is the highest Cambridge exam, there are not many students that want to take it. So with that there are not many optional dates for the exams. I will have to go to Dublin and spend the night there in order to attend my exam. I already passed the CAE, which the others are taking, back in 2019 so I wanted to take a chance at the CPE. The preparation given at school was still on CAE level as they couldn’t provide me with Classes on CPE level but I studied on my own and worked on material found on websites.

I tried my best to give you a little glimpse of what my life in Ireland is like and I hope I could entertain you with my experience. Cheers and until next time.

As you already know, part two of my adventure started 3 months ago on the 29th January. Since the end of January, I have been in the city called Cork, which is located in the south of Ireland at the river Lee.

I started out living with a host mother Sabrina and her dog Harry. She lives in Ballincollig, a small village outside the city. She was incredibly sweet and always took me everywhere. For example, we went shopping together and so on. However, after three weeks I had to change my host family because I was only living with her temporarily. And do you know who my new host family was? Her sister Cora and she was just as lovely and helpful as Sabrina. Cora is a nurse and has travelled almost all over the world because of her work. It’s always exciting to hear her stories and experiences as travelling is a big passion for me. The best part is that Cora always cooks specialities from different countries. By the way, she cooks incredibly delicious food!

Like everyone from KV+, I am also doing an internship and I work with Nils and Jean-Philippe at Irish Guide Dogs. Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind (IGDB) is Ireland’s national charity dedicated to enabling people who are vision impaired and families of children with autism to achieve improved mobility and independence. For over 40 years they have worked with their community of Breeders, Puppy Raisers, Home Socialisers, Temporary Boarders, Trainers, Staff, Volunteers and supporters to change as many lives as possible. On the very first day, I was fascinated by how motivated all the staff are and how passionate they are about their job and the business. Especially their passion for dogs and supporting people with disabilities. I personally work in the Human Resource department together with my boss Eileen and am therefore responsible for all employees. I am available to answer their questions and organise and prepare interviews, answer emails, make phone calls and do a lot more. Sometimes I am also allowed to be present at the training sessions for the dogs and have even been allowed to help with the training myself. Apart from the HR, I am also responsible for the puppies and get to play with them and look after them when they come to us for their placement test. They are so incredibly cute, you can hardly imagine!

Besides work, I love to explore Ireland. Even though it’s a bit difficult to travel by public transport in Ireland, but there are still quite beautiful places to visit in the Cork region. For example Cobh, Kinsale, Youghal, Spike Island, Ballycotton and many more. Outside of Cork, the capital Dublin is an absolute MUST! I was in Dublin with some friends over St Patrick’s Day and it is an incredibly beautiful city. There are so many beautiful places in Dublin and above all it’s a big student city and popular with exchange students and therefore very multicultural. It’s a perfect place to get to know new cultures and different people from different countries. Definitely worth a visit. Besides, Galway is also a beautiful city. And when you are there, you must do a day trip to the famous Cliffs of Moher. Just breathtaking.

So now I hope that you got a little insight into my life in Ireland and maybe one day you will make a trip to Ireland and enjoy the beautiful nature. Cheers and have a lovely day!
